Adrian Houser struck out a career-high 10 while allowing one run in six innings, and the Milwaukee Brewers held on for a 3-2 win against the visiting Texas Rangers in the middle game of their three-game series on Saturday evening.
Houser (5-5) allowed three hits and walked one. Trent Grisham went 3-for-3 in the leadoff spot with a walk and two runs, and Keston Hiura homered for the Brewers, who have won five in a row.
Texas right-hander Pedro Payano (1-1) went three innings in his third major league start, allowing two runs and five hits. He struck out one and walked three. Danny Santana and Shin-Soo Choo homered for the Rangers, who have lost four in a row.
Grisham scored on a wild pitch in the first inning for a 1-0 lead, and Hiura led off the third with a homer over the left field fence to make it 2-0.
The Brewers strung together three straight one-out singles in the fourth inning by Grisham, Yasmani Grandal and Mike Moustakas for a 3-0 lead.
Houser didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning, when the Rangers put runners on first and second with no outs. Houser got back-to-back fielder's choices and then struck out pinch hitter Willie Calhoun to keep Texas scoreless.
Santana homered to deep right-center field in the sixth to break the shutout.
Junior Guerra threw 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for Milwaukee before Drew Pomeranz, acquired at the trade deadline from the San Francisco Giants on July 31, came in with one out in the eighth and gave up a solo homer to Choo to make it 3-2.
Pomeranz then issued back-to-back walks before Rougned Odor swung and missed at a 3-2 pitch well above the strike zone. On the same pitch, Grandal threw out Elvis Andrus at second on a double-steal attempt to end the inning.
Matt Albers entered in the ninth with a runner on first and no outs and got Logan Forsythe to hit into a 6-4-3 double play on his second pitch. Pinch hitter Hunter Pence then grounded out to end the game, giving Albers his third save.
