Anthony DeSclafani pitched seven scoreless innings against his former team, leading the visiting Cincinnati Reds to a 5-0 win over the Miami Marlins on Wednesday night.
The Reds will look to complete a four-game sweep of the Marlins on Thursday.
DeSclafani (9-7) allowed just two hits -- both singles -- and one walk while striking out eight batters. He is one win away from the first double-figure-victory season of his career, although this is the third time in five years that he has reached nine victories.
In Wednesday's game, he threw 110 pitches, including 71 for strikes. He got eight ground-ball outs and two in the air in what was his best performance of the season.
DeSclafani was backed by Aristides Aquino, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a homer and a double. Eugenio Suarez was another Reds hitting star, going 2-for-4 with a homer. He leads the Reds with 38 homers and has gone deep in four consecutive games.
It was the second straight night that the Marlins -- who have the worst record in the National League -- were beaten by one of their former pitchers. Luis Castillo turned the trick on Tuesday, striking out 11 batters.
Reliever Kevin Gausman finished Wednesday's game for Cincinnati, pitching two scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and no walks while fanning three.
Sandy Alcantara (4-12) took the loss, yielding six hits, one walk and four runs in six innings. He struck out a season-high-tying eight batters. The Marlins are just 8-18 when Alcantara starts this year.
Alcantara got in trouble quickly as Joey Votto drew a one-out walk in the first, winning a seven-pitch battle. Suarez singled to right field, and Aquino pulled a hanging changeup over the left field fence for a 3-0 lead.
Aquino then hit the first pitch of the fourth inning for a double to left. Tucker Barnhart, also swinging at the first pitch, drove in Aquino with a two-out double to right, giving Cincinnati a 4-0 lead.
The final run scored on Suarez's homer to left-center in the eighth off Jeff Brigham.
