San Diego Padres vs San Francisco Giants Match Player Stats On Aug 29, 2019

Manuel Margot and Austin Hedges hit home runs Thursday night, helping rookie right-hander Chris Paddack win for the first time in five starts as the San Diego Padres beat the host San Francisco Giants 5-3 in the opener of a four-game series.

Reliever Matt Strahm worked into and out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the eighth inning, allowing just one run, as the fourth-place Padres moved within three games of the third-place Giants in the National League West.

In the opener of a seven-game trip, the Padres took the lead for good with a three-run third inning, with the first two runs scoring on Margot's 11th homer of the season. Eric Hosmer added an RBI double later in the inning.

Hedges' homer, his 10th, also came off Giants starter Dereck Rodriguez (5-7) and increased the San Diego lead to 5-0 in the fourth.

Paddack (8-7), who had gone 0-2 with a 10.06 ERA in his previous four outings, retired the first 10 Giants in order before Brandon Belt homered, his 15th of the season, with one out in the fourth.

The Giants didn't score again until the eighth, by which point Paddack had headed to the showers, having allowed one run and five hits in seven innings. He struck out eight and did not issue a walk.

Attempting to snap a three-game home losing streak, the Giants brought the potential tying run to the plate with no outs in the eighth after singles by Donovan Solano and Joey Rickard followed by a walk to Belt.

Strahm then got Evan Longoria to ground into a double play, scoring Solano, before retiring Alex Dickerson on a fly to right, retaining a 5-2 lead.

Right-hander Andres Munoz completed the ninth inning for his first career save, but not before pinch hitter Stephen Vogt's two-out RBI double got the Giants within 5-3 and again brought the potential tying run to the plate.

Munoz got Solano to ground out to end it.

Still winless at home this year in 11 games (five starts), Rodriguez was charged with five runs on eight hits in five innings. He struck out three with no walks.

Josh Naylor had a double and a single for the Padres, who have gone just 7-9 against the Giants this season.

Longoria had a double for the Giants, who matched the Padres in hits 8-8.
