Rookie Logan Webb pitched six strong innings to help the visiting San Francisco Giants end their three-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday.
The 22-year-old right-hander allowed one run on two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts, which matched his career high, in his first career appearance against Atlanta. Webb had struggled in his three previous starts, going 0-2 with a 10.22 ERA.
Right-handed submariner Ty Rogers worked two scoreless innings of relief, and lefty Will Smith pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two, to earn his 34th save.
Atlanta (96-61) finished with a 50-31 record at home and will complete the regular season on the road with two games at Kansas City and three at the New York Mets. The Braves will be without first baseman Freddie Freeman against the Royals, however, after Freeman left Sunday's game in the seventh inning with right elbow pain. Braves manager Brian Snitker told reporters after the game Freeman will stay behind in Atlanta for that series.
San Francisco (75-81) finished 42-39 on the road and will end the season at home with three games against Colorado and three against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Atlanta starter Dallas Keuchel (8-7) worked six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Keuchel has dropped his last two starts after winning five in a row.
The Giants scored their first run in the sixth inning when Evan Longoria picked up his first hit of the series, a double to right field that ricocheted off the wall and past right fielder Matt Joyce. Center fielder Billy Hamilton had to race over and retrieve the ball, by which time Austin Slater scored. The run gave the Giants their first lead of the series.
San Francisco tacked on two more runs when Joey Rickard's liner bounced off the glove of diving left fielder Nick Markakis and rolled into the corner, allowing Longoria and Kevin Pillar to score to give the Giants a 3-0 lead.
Atlanta made it 3-1 in the bottom of the frame. Adeiny Hechavarria tripled and scored on Freeman's ground ball, resulting in the first baseman's 121st RBI. Hechavarria, signed on Aug. 16, is batting .291 (16-for-55) since joining the team.
The Giants got the run back in the seventh against reliever Luke Jackson on Longoria's RBI single.
