Cleveland @ Philadelphia preview
Citizens Bank Park
Last Meeting ( Jun 23, 2010 ) Cleveland 6, Philadelphia 7
With one swing of the bat, Jimmy Rollins rediscovered his gap-toothed smile and reaffirmed his worth to the City of Brotherly Love. The Phillies (37-22) would welcome a repeat performance on Thursday afternoon as they vie for the three-game sweep of the struggling Indians (26-44).
After going hitless in his first eight at-bats since returning from the disabled list with a right calf strain, Rollins ensured that his first hit would be a memorable one.
The 2007 National League Most Valuable Player deposited a Kerry Wood offering just inside the right-field foul pole for a game-winning two-run homer as the Philadelphia Phillies recorded a 7-6 triumph over the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday.
After his throwing error plated the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning, Rollins made amends by belting his third homer of the season β and first of the walk-off variety in his career.
Raul Ibanez had a two-run double and Jayson Werth and Brian Schneider added solo home runs for Philadelphia, which has won five of its last seven.
Keeping the Phillies' bats at bay will be the responsibility of Fausto Carmona (6-5, 3.31 ERA). The 26-year-old right-hander has followed a four-game losing streak with two solid outings β striking out a season-high seven in both contests.
Carmona also tends to keep the damage to a minimum, as he has allowed three runs or less in 12 of his 14 games this season. Thursday's start will be his first against Philadelphia.
The Phillies will counter with Joe Blanton (2-5, 6.96 ERA). Despite his subpar record and bloated ERA, the 29-year-old Tennessee native actually had a productive outing his last time out to the hill.
Blanton didn't allow a hit for the first five innings against the Minnesota Twins on Friday. The right-hander struggled in the following two frames, but was able to secure his first win since May 15 as the Phillies cruised to a 9-5 triumph.
Prior to that outing, the burly Blanton had done little this season to justify the three-year, $24-million contract he signed in January.
Blanton has also struggled against the Indians, posting a 2-5 mark with a 4.30 ERA in eight career outings.
Speaking of Philadelphia hurlers, injured reliever Ryan Madson will throw a bullpen session on Thursday and will begin a rehabilitation assignment on Sunday. The hurler has been sidelined by a toe injury which was brought about by frustration when he kicked a folding chair.
Shin-Soo Choo will be looking to capitalize on his recent hot streak. The 27-year-old South Korean belted a pair of two-run homers on Wednesday, but the Indians dropped their fourth straight and eighth in nine games.
