Barry Enright is about to get the biggest test of his brief major-league career. The rookie right-hander takes the mound in the series finale Sunday against the San Francisco Giants at Chase Field in an attempt to salvage a win in the four-game set and keep his solid run going since joining the rotation.
The 24-year-old has been a pleasant surprise in a dismal Diamondback season since making the jump from Double-A Mobile. Enright is coming off his best start since his promotion on June 30 as he limited the New York Mets to five hits, one earned run, and a walk with eight strikeouts in eight innings, the longest outing of his career.
It evened Enright’s record to 2-2 and dropped his ERA to 2.66 in four starts. After that game, interim manager Kirk Gibson and catcher Chris Snyder praised Enright’s poise and his ability to throw first-pitch strikes.
The Pepperdine product is going to need more of the same against the Giants, who have won 10 of their last 12 games and counter with the two-time defending Cy Young award winner Tim Lincecum (10-4, 3.18 ERA).
If Enright is going to win consecutive starts for the first time in his career, he is going to need Chris Young and Justin Upton to stay hot at the plate.
Young is hitting over .300 since Gibson re-inserted the center fielder back in the leadoff spot, a position he found himself in regularly before this season. The first-time All-Star has been more aggressive on the base paths and has sparked the offense.
Upton is in the midst of an 11-game hit streak, raising his average 19 points to .275.
Success won't come easily against Lincecum, who is 5-1 with a 2.36 ERA in 10 career starts against the Diamondbacks. The lone defeat came earlier this season when the right-hander was touched up for five earned in five innings in a 8-7 loss at Chase Field.
Lincecum’s previous start lasted just 4 2/3 innings as he gave up seven hits and five earned in a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Giants' offense continues to surge behind Buster Posey’s 17-game hitting streak and Aubrey Huff’s consistency as they make a push toward reaching the first-place San Diego Padres, who have a three-game lead in the National League West.
