Arizona @ Philadelphia preview
Citizens Bank Park
Last Meeting ( Jul 27, 2010 ) Arizona 5, Philadelphia 9
The Philadelphia Phillies continue to add victories in the win column – and ailments on the injury list. The Phillies (54-46) will look for their season-high seventh straight victory and 10th consecutive triumph at Citizens Bank Park when they face the woeful Arizona Diamondbacks (37-63) on Wednesday.
Philadelphia has moved to within 3 1/2 games of the National League East-leading Atlanta Braves, while cellar-dwelling Arizona has lost five in a row and is 13-34 on the road this season.
All-Star Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth and Cody Random belted two-run homers as the Phillies posted a 9-5 triumph over the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
Howard and Raul Ibanez added run-scoring singles and Carlos Ruiz had a bases-loaded walk for Philadelphia, which lost Shane Victorino to a left oblique strain in the seventh inning. The talented center fielder joins shortstop Jimmy Rollins (foot) and Chase Utley (thumb) on the sideline
Victorino is slated to undergo an MRI on Wednesday morning. If he is forced to miss time, highly touted prospect Domonic Brown may get a call up to the majors.
Arizona wasn't immune to injuries as right fielder Justin Upton left Tuesday's game with tightness in his right hip. The top pick of the 2005 draft, Upton is the proud owner of a 13-game hitting streak.
More bad news for the Diamondbacks may come in the form of Roy Halladay (11-8, 2.28 ERA). The 33-year-old right-hander was impressive in his last outing, scattering five hits over eight scoreless innings while striking out nine in a 6-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies last Friday.
The architect of a perfect game earlier in the season, Halladay has permitted just one run in his last 33 innings.
Halladay is 2-0 with a 3.86 ERA in just two games against Arizona. He hasn't faced the Diamondbacks since 2004.
Arizona will counter with Edwin Jackson (6-9, 5.01 ERA), who was his own worst enemy in his last outing. The 26-year-old right-hander had two throwing errors which led to three runs in his last start, and those proved costly in a 7-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants last Friday. Jackson has lost three in a row, allowing five home runs in that span.
Wednesday's contest marks Jackson's first outing against the Phillies.
