Arizona @ Philadelphia preview
Citizens Bank Park
Last Meeting ( Jul 28, 2010 ) Arizona 1, Philadelphia 7
After waiting to see what Domonic Brown could do at the major-league level, Philadelphia Phillies fans are eager to find out what he'll do for an encore. The Phillies (55-46) will find out Thursday as they'll look for their season-high eighth straight victory and 11th consecutive triumph at Citizens Bank Park when they face the struggling Arizona Diamondbacks (37-64).
Recently tabbed the top prospect by Baseball America, Brown was recalled on Wednesday morning and led the charge in the evening's 7-1 victory over the Diamondbacks.
The 22-year-old Brown had an RBI double in his first at-bat and added a run-scoring sacrifice fly in his final turn at the plate.
It was a solid debut for Brown, who was batting .327 with 20 home runs and 68 RBIs in 93 games between Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season.
He was kept within the system when the Phillies ushered four prospects to the Cleveland Indians for Cliff Lee and three others to the Toronto Blue Jays for Roy Halladay.
Brown wasn't alone in the Phillies' offensive outburst on Wednesday.
Carlos Ruiz had a pair of run-scoring doubles and drove in three, Jayson Werth had three hits and Placido Polanco added an RBI single for Philadelphia.
Looking to keep Brown and company in check is Joe Saunders, who will be making his debut with the Diamondbacks on Thursday. The left-hander joined Arizona as part of package that sent Dan Haren to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
In his last outing on Friday, Saunders surrendered just one run and seven hits in seven innings. Unfortunately for the 29-year-old, he suffered a 1-0 loss to the Texas Rangers to push his record to 6-10 on the season.
Saunders was victorious in his previous outing against the Phillies two years ago.
Philadelphia will counter with Kyle Kendrick (6-4, 4.60 ERA). The 25-year-old right-hander bounced back after being demoted to allow one run and six hits in seven innings en route to a 10-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday.
Kendrick would love to follow in the footsteps of Halladay, who pitched a gem on Wednesday. The ace allowed one run and six hits while striking out nine en route to his eighth complete game of the season and 57th of his career.
Miguel Montero had an RBI double in the ninth for Arizona, which has dropped six consecutive games and fell to 13-35 on the road this season.
