Chicago @ Detroit preview

The great Casey Stengel had a memorable quote about doubleheaders when he managed the 1962 New York Mets.
"The only thing worse than a Mets game is a Mets doubleheader," Stengel said.
The Mets limped to a dismal 40-120 mark, so that’s likely the root of Stengel’s analysis. But, for the most part, it’s the general feeling that managers and players have about doubleheaders.
Instead of going 0-for-4, a player can go 0-for-8. Or a manager can completely overwork his bullpen in one day.
Still, sometimes two games are necessary because of poor weather or other circumstances, and it still counts in the standings.
With that in mind, the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers have a doubleheader scheduled for Tuesday.
In the nightcap, the Tigers are set to go with right-hander Jeremy Bonderman. The White Sox, as a sign of why managers despise doubleheaders, still have not named an official starter. The team may recall right-hander Carlos Torres to make a spot start, although newly acquired starter Edwin Jackson could be an option.
Bonderman will be on extended rest, as his last start came back on July 25. In that outing against the Toronto Blue Jays, Bonderman went 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs and eight hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
Bonderman struggled in his start before that, too, allowing five runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings en route to a 8-6 loss to the Texas Rangers.
While he has yet to face the White Sox this season, Bonderman is 5-10 with a 4.79 ERA in 16 lifetime starts against the South Siders.
Boston Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz shut down the Tigers for eight innings on Sunday. They eventually scored three runs in the ninth to tie the game, but then lost it in the bottom of the frame in a 4-3 defeat to the Red Sox.
Miguel Cabrera had a two-run double, and Jhonny Peralta had a RBI single to pace Detroit.
Assuming the White Sox go with Torres, it will be his season debut. He made eight appearances (five starts) last year, posting a 1-2 mark with a 6.04 ERA.
At Triple-A Charlotte this season, Torres is 7-7 with a 3.41 ERA.
The White Sox scored all four of their runs in the fifth inning in Sunday’s 4-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics. Brent Lillibridge had a three-run triple and Juan Pierre had a successful suicide squeeze to score Lillibridge.
