Washington @ Arizona preview
Chase Field
Last Meeting ( Aug 4, 2010 ) Washington 7, Arizona 2
The future will be on display for two dormant clubs on Thursday.
A pair of highly-prized young hurlers will oppose each other when Washington’s Ross Detwiler squares-off against Arizona’s Barry Enright in the finale of a four-game set between the squads.
The 24-year-old Detwiler was the seventh overall pick of the 2007 draft, while Enright was taken in the second round of the same draft. The two have combined for only eight starts on the season.
Their teams are hoping that each can help lead resurgences in future years as both the Nationals and Diamondbacks toil in last place of their respective divisions.
Adam Dunn continued his recent tear by belting a pair of home runs and driving in four runs to carry Washington to a 7-2 win in Wednesday’s affair.
Dunn, who was the subject of trade rumors leading up to the deadline and was placed on waivers earlier in the week, has four home runs in as many games and a team-high 28 on the season.
Detwiler (0-1, 1.00 ERA) has been sharp in his two starts since being recalled from the minors, but has no wins to show for it.
The left-hander allowed no earned runs in 3 2/3 innings of his debut, but his defense let him down in leading to five unearned runs. He followed that up by surrendering a run on five hits in 5 1/3 frames against Philadelphia on Saturday.
Prior to his promotion, Detwiler was sharp in splitting time between advanced Class-A and Double-A, posting a 2.27 ERA through eight starts.
He made 15 appearances - 14 starts - with the Nationals last season, going 1-6 with a 5.00 ERA, but never facing the Diamondbacks.
Enright (2-2, 2.78 ERA) has less overall experience in the majors as a whole, but will be making his seventh start of the campaign. He picked up a win upon making his big-league debut on June 30 and has yet to surrender more than three runs in any appearance.
Enright has taken a pair of no-decisions in his last two outings, giving up four combined runs over 12 innings.
Before he got the call, the right-hander made 14 starts in Double-A and went 4-1 with a 2.88 ERA.
Adam LaRoche homered and Justin Upton drove in a run to account for the Diamondbacks’ lone offense in Wednesday’s setback. The blast was LaRoche’s third in four games.
Over its last 13 contests, Arizona hasn't strung together consecutive wins.
