Toronto @ Los Angeles preview
Angel Stadium
Last Meeting ( Aug 14, 2010 ) Toronto 2, LA Angels 7
One day after signing a lucrative five-year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays, Ricky Romero will have the chance to prove he's worth the bucks.Romero looks for his 10th victory of the season Sunday as the Blue Jays visit the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the rubber match of their three-game series. Toronto posted a 3-0 victory in Friday's series opener, while the Angels responded with a 7-2 triumph Saturday.
The weekend has been a sensational one for Romero, who inked a deal worth more than $30 million that will keep him in Toronto through the 2015 season. The 25-year-old Los Angeles native and Cal State Fullerton alum had the opportunity to share the good news with family and friends in the area.
Now, he'll look to cap the festivities with a victory against a team that manhandled him in his only previous appearance at Angels Stadium.
Romero (9-7) was ravaged for seven runs on 11 hits over 5 1/3 innings in that May 25 start, as the Angels went on to win 8-3. It was the shortest outing of his season to that point, and raised his average nearly three-quarters of a point.
The left-hander has had a few more shaky starts since then but has settled down over the past month, lasting at least six innings in each of his last five outings. His last one was the worst of the bunch, as he was tagged for five runs on eight hits over six innings but escaped with a no-decision in a 7-5 loss to the Boston Red Sox.
Romero is 1-2 all-time against the hometown Angels, with a 4.66 ERA over 19 1/3 innings.
He'll be hoping the Toronto offense can rediscover its home-run touch. The Blue Jays lead the league in homers by a landslide, but have gone deep just twice in their last four games.
Fred Lewis' solo home run was one of the lone bright spots in Saturday's loss, as the Jays managed just four hits and went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Ervin Santana kept the Toronto bats silent over seven strong innings for his 12th victory of the season, and fourth in his last five starts.
Newly acquired Dan Haren (8-10) will try to give the Angels their third straight series victory in Sunday's finale.
Haren, who came to Los Angeles in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks late last month, has pitched well for the Angels but has a 1-2 record in four starts to show for it. The 29-year-old collected his first win with Los Angeles in his last outing, allowing one run on five hits over seven innings to beat Kansas City 3-1.
Haren has been the beneficiary of some major run support in his career against Toronto, going 5-1 despite having a 5.55 ERA. He last faced them May 21 as a member of the Diamondbacks, earning the victory after allowing four runs over eight innings in a game won 8-6 by Arizona.
Haren surrendered four home runs in that game, and has given up a whopping 26 on the season.
