Detroit @ New York preview
Yankee Stadium
Last Meeting ( Aug 17, 2010 ) Detroit 2, NY Yankees 6
The Detroit Tigers believed their fortunes on the road had taken a turn for the better. CC Sabathia and the New York Yankees dispelled that notion Tuesday.
The Tigers look to begin a new road winning streak tonight when they face the Yankees in the third game of their four-game series.
Detroit had won three straight road games, raising its disappointing record away from home to 20-36. But the Tigers were unable to extend the streak against Sabathia, who tossed seven impressive innings en route to his American League-leading 16th win of the season.
Former Tiger Curtis Granderson and Robinson Cano homered for New York, which avoided a three-game losing streak by beating Detroit for just the second time in six meetings this year. Granderson is 4-for-6 over the first two games of the series.
Austin Jackson and Brandon Inge went deep for the Tigers, who have won just four of their last 18 road games.
Picking up a victory tonight may prove difficult for Detroit as Jeremy Bonderman has struggled in his last few starts - and throughout his career against the Yankees.
Bonderman has lost his last two outings, including Friday's start against the Chicago White Sox in which he surrendered six runs and seven hits over six innings in an 8-4 setback.
The 27-year-old owns a record of 3-8 with a 5.29 ERA in 13 games - including one relief appearance - vs. New York. On May 12, he pitched well, allowing only two runs and five hits over seven frames but was saddled with the loss in an 8-0 defeat.
Yankees captain Derek Jeter is hitting just .229 (8-for-35) against Bonderman but has three home runs and seven RBIs. Alex Rodriguez has fared well vs. the right-hander, going 9-for-29 (.310) with two homers and six RBIs, but is expected to miss his second straight game with a strained calf.
In nine road starts this year, Bonderman is 2-4 with a 6.45 ERA.
Dustin Moseley will make his fifth start for New York. He lost for the second time in three outings on Friday, yielding four runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings of a 4-3 setback at Kansas City.
Moseley has appeared in five games - two starts - against the Tigers in his career, posting a 1-0 record and 4.85 ERA.
In his two previous starts at Yankee Stadium, the 28-year-old Moseley went 1-1 with a 4.61 ERA.
Detroit was without second baseman Carlos Guillen on Tuesday. Guillen suffered a knee injury in the Tigers' 3-1 victory on Monday when New York's Brett Gardner slid hard into second attempting to break up the game-ending double play hit into by Jeter.
