One promising Arizona Diamondbacks starter dazzled against the San Francisco Giants on Friday. Another takes a shot at matching the effort on Saturday.

Daniel Hudson strives to follow Barry Enright’s seven shutout innings with some splendid pitching of his own when the Diamondbacks and Giants square off in the second contest of a three-game series.

Hudson has been solid for Arizona since being acquired in the late July deal that sent Edwin Jackson to the Chicago White Sox. The right-hander is 3-1 with a 1.72 ERA in five starts.

The hurler has allowed two runs or fewer in four of the starts and threw seven innings of shutout ball against the Colorado Rockies in his last outing.

Hudson struck out nine in two of his last three outings and 10 in the other. The lone downside is that Hudson has given up four homers.

The Diamondbacks might need a stingy pitching outing to compete with the Giants on Saturday with Matt Cain on the mound.

Cain has dominated Arizona twice this season, throwing a one-hit shutout in late May and blanking the Diamondbacks on three hits over eight innings in July.

In addition to allowing just four hits, Cain has walked just three. He struck out nine in each of the two victories.

Cain is coming off a strong outing in which he gave up two runs and five hits over eight innings while beating the Cincinnati Reds to even his record at 10-10. Cain’s ERA is 3.07.

The hurler is 6-4 with a 3.22 ERA in 16 career starts against the Diamondbacks.

Arizona’s victory on Friday snapped a seven-game losing streak to San Francisco. The win was also just the Diamondbacks' third in their last 16 games in San Francisco.

Enright and two relievers halted a Giants’ attack that had rolled up 38 runs and 53 hits during a three-game series against Cincinnati. The shutout was just the third of the season for the Diamondbacks.

Arizona shortstop Stephen Drew scored three runs while going 2-for-4 for his third straight multi-hit game. Drew is 8-for-13 and has scored seven runs in the three contests.

Drew is a .292 career hitter against Cain in 24 career at-bats. He has two homers and five RBIs off Cain.

First baseman Adam LaRoche hit his 22nd homer of the season and has been red hot in August. LaRoche is batting .326 with eight homers and 18 RBIs this month.

San Francisco second baseman Freddy Sanchez continued his torrid hitting with a 2-for-4 game. Sanchez is 11-for-15 (.733) over the last four outings.

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
