Pittsburgh @ Cincinnati preview

Great American Ball Park

Last Meeting ( Sep 11, 2010 ) Pittsburgh 4, Cincinnati 5

Things are getting pretty lonely in the Cincinnati outfield and the Reds are hoping to land a healthy body to help them down the stretch.

With Chris Heisey the latest Reds outfielder to suffer an injury, Cincinnati turned to veteran infielder Miguel Cairo to fill the void. Who will play there on Sunday is anyone's guess as the Reds host the Pittsburgh Pirates in the finale of a three-game series at the Great American Ball Park on Sunday.

Left fielder Jonny Gomes and center fielder Drew Stubbs were the lone healthy outfielders entering Saturday's contest. Heisey, who was injured in a collision at first base on Friday, was scratched from the starting lineup on Saturday.

Luckily for the Reds, Heisey was healthy enough to enter the game as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning. He then doubled to drive home the tying run and the Reds won the game 5-4 in the 10th inning on a walk-off homer by Joey Votto.

But the growing list of injured outfielders is a concern for the Reds, with Jay Bruce, Laynce Nix and Jim Edmonds all sidelined. Bruce was said to be close to returning from a side injury. He has taken extensive batting practice and could be ready any day.

Nix (ankle) remains on the disabled list, still unable to run. Edmonds came off the DL on Friday but is not ready to play.

Cairo made his first appearance in the outfield since 2008 in Saturday's game. He went 0-for-2 with a sacrifice fly..

Paul Janish is another candidate for the Reds outfield and pitcher Mike Leake also volunteered but manager Dusty Baker would rather pass on that option. Bruce said he was ready for Friday's marathon, which the Reds won in 12 innings.

The Reds needed 10 innings on Saturday. After Edinson Volquez dominated the contest for seven innings allowing just one hit, the Cincinnati bullpen blew a 3-0 lead.

Pittsburgh rallied for four runs in the eighth inning off reliable Nick Masset and rookie Aroldis Chapman. Neil Walker gave Pittsburgh the lead with a two-run single off Chapman with two outs.

Shortstop Orlando Cabrera returned to the Reds' lineup after missing three straight starts.

Cincinnati has won six straight games at home.

Brian Burres starts the finale for Pittsburgh. Burres was victorious in his last outing, a 3-1 win over Atlanta where he went six innings allowing just one run on five hits.

Burres' last win before that was back on May 6. He is 0-1 against the Reds, suffering a 7-5 loss at Cincinnati in late May when he allowed five runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Johnny Cueto (12-5) starts for the Reds. Cueto is 9-2 with a 2.88 ERA in 12 games against the Reds, including a 9-4 win on Aug. 4.

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
