Last Meeting ( Jul 22, 2012 ) San Francisco 3, Philadelphia 4

The San Francisco Giants look for their seventh straight win on Monday when they host the Philadelphia Phillies, who are coming off a 14-2 loss to the lowly Miami Marlins. The Phillies dropped five games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East with the loss, which included another poor outing by ace Roy Halladay. After the game, the Phillies announced that Halladay’s sore right shoulder will likely require a stint on the disabled list.

The Giants have won 10 of their last 12 home games, and they’re coming off a three-game sweep of the rival Los Angeles Dodgers. San Francisco won each of the three games by one run, and closer Sergio Romo has converted 12 saves in 13 opportunities. Center fielder Angel Pagan missed Sunday’s contest with a right hamstring strain and is listed as day-to-day. Right fielder Hunter Pence, who struggled after being traded from Philadelphia last season, has hit safely in 25 of the Giants' first 31 games.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies LH Cliff Lee (2-2, 3.46 ERA) vs. Giants LH Madison Bumgarner (3-0, 1.55)

Lee has gone winless in his last four starts since opening the season 2-0. He struggled against the Cleveland Indians last Wednesday, when he gave up five runs (four earned) over six innings. The Phillies have scored just 15 runs while Lee is in the game over his first six starts. Pence is 3-for-8 with a home run against Lee, who is 4-0 with a 0.63 ERA in five career starts against San Francisco. The three-time All-Star tossed 10 scoreless innings in his only start against the Giants last season.

Bumgarner has turned in a quality start in five of his first six outings, including last Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks when he allowed three hits over seven shutout innings. “He could have five wins,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy told reporters. “We’re not getting a lot of runs for him, but he’s doing what we need, and that’s putting up zeroes for us.” Opponents are batting .181 against Bumgarner, who is 1-1 with a 2.57 ERA in two regular-season starts against the Phillies.

WALK-OFFS

1. Phillies C Carlos Ruiz, who was suspended for the first 25 games because of amphetamine use, has two hits in his first 20 at-bats.

2. The Giants have already recorded a series sweep of every other National League West opponent.

3. Each of the Phillies’ last nine home runs have been solo shots.

PREDICTION: Giants 3, Phillies 2

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
