Miami @ Chicago preview
Guaranteed Rate Field
Last Meeting ( May 25, 2013 ) Miami 1, Chi. White Sox 2
The Chicago White Sox are far from an offensive juggernaut, ranking last in the American League in a number of hitting categories, including runs scored, but they've found an even less potent offensive squad in the Miami Marlins. The White Sox will try to complete a three-game sweep of the visiting Marlins on Sunday after claiming walk-off wins in each of the first two games. Chicago has won eight of 11 to climb within four games of division-leading Detroit in the AL Central.
The Marlins don't have the worst record in the majors by accident. They've struggled to close out games - they're 6-12 in one-run contests - and are 6-18 on the road. They've lost four straight and 11 of 13 after a 2-1 defeat Saturday. The offense has been especially awful lately, as Miami has averaged 1.82 runs over its past 17 games and has been shut out five times during that stretch.
TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, Fox Sports Florida (Miami), WGN (Chicago)
PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Alex Sanabia (3-6, 4.56 ERA) vs. White Sox RH Dylan Axelrod (2-3, 4.13)
Sanabia had lost five straight starts before beating Philadelphia on Monday. He held the Phillies to one run on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings - his best outing since tossing six scoreless frames against the New York Mets in his season debut. Sanabia has never faced the White Sox, and the only Chicago player who has seen him is Adam Dunn (1-for-8).
Axelrod has won two straight starts after holding Boston to two runs on four hits over six innings on Monday. His strikeout numbers were down, as he only sat down two Red Sox hitters on strikes, but he has limited his walks over the past month. The 27-year-old right-hander has never faced the Marlins, and the only Miami player he has faced is Jeff Mathis, who struck out in his only at-bat against Axelrod.
WALK-OFFS
1. White Sox RF Alex Rios had his 18-game hitting streak snapped with an 0-for-4 game Saturday.
2. Sanabia has induced 12 ground-ball double plays, the most in the National League. The White Sox have grounded into 32 double plays, the third-fewest in the American League.
3. Miami has scored three runs or fewer in 39 of its 49 games.
PREDICTION: White Sox 4, Marlins 3
