After an eight-game losing streak, the Seattle Mariners have rebounded with a pair of victories and can finish a quick two-game sweep of the San Diego Padres when the teams meet Tuesday at Safeco Field before venturing to Petco Park for two more encounters. The Mariners got a stellar performance from Aaron Harang, who threw his first shutout since 2009, and posted 11 hits in a 9-0 rout of the Padres in the opener Monday.San Diego won five of six meetings in 2012, including all three in Seattle, but managed only four hits on Memorial Day in falling for the fifth time in its last six games. The Padres are 9-16 on the road and have sustained all three of their shutout losses away from home. Monday matched San Diego's largest margin of defeat this season. The other nine-run loss came in the season-opener at New York.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Edinson Volquez (3-5, 5.76 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Brandon Maurer (2-6, 6.80)
After a five-start stretch in which he was 3-0 with a 2.59 ERA, Volquez has dropped two straight, allowing five runs both times. Both of those outings were in Petco Park, where Volquez has performed well as a Padre. However, he is just 6-8 with a 5.71 ERA on the road since joining San Diego before the 2012 season. The 29-year-old is 3-0 with a 2.67 mark in six games (five starts) against Seattle.
Maurer's up and down rookie season continued with another big dip at Anaheim on Wednesday, when he gave up a season-high seven runs on 11 hits in only three frames. It was the third time in four starts in which Maurer failed to get into the sixth inning. The right-hander has his only two wins at Safeco Field but opponents are hitting .337 against him there. Seattle is 2-7 in Maurer's starts.
