San Diego @ Los Angeles preview
Dodger Stadium
Last Meeting ( Apr 17, 2013 ) San Diego 7, LA Dodgers 2
The last time the San Diego Padres visited Dodger Stadium, left fielder Carlos Quentin was not inside the venue while serving an eight-game suspension because of breaking the collarbone of Los Angeles pitcher Zack Greinke in a benches-clearing brawl. Quentin will be on the field this time as the Padres visit the Dodgers for Monday’s opener of a three-game set. Greinke pitched Saturday and won’t face the Padres in this series.
Los Angeles recalled highly regarded outfield prospect Yasiel Puig – the Cuban whom the Dodgers gave a $42 million contract last summer – from Double-A Chattanooga on Sunday. Puig will be asked to inject some energy and production into an outfield that has seen center fielder Matt Kemp (hamstring) placed on the disabled list and left fielder Carl Crawford (hamstring) possibly headed there. San Diego swept the mid-April series in Los Angeles without Quentin by a cumulative score of 22-7 and is 4-2 against the Dodgers this season.
TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, Fox Sports San Diego, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles)
PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres LH Eric Stults (4-4, 3.86) vs. Dodgers LH Chris Capuano (1-4, 5.45)
Stults struck out a career-high 12 in eight innings while holding the Seattle Mariners to one run and three hits in a no-decision his last time out. He already has 50 strikeouts this season, five shy of his career-best total reached last season. Stults is 1-1 with a 5.73 ERA in two starts against the Dodgers this season and has a 4.24 ERA in three career outings.
Capuano is dealing with triceps pain after allowing eight earned runs in 10 2/3 innings over his last two starts and could be replaced by minor-leaguer Stephen Fife. Capuano gave up five runs and five hits in two-plus innings while falling to the Padres on April 16 and is 5-5 with a 3.88 ERA in 15 career appearances (12 starts) against the Padres. Fife started for the Dodgers on April 21 and hasn’t pitched since because of a sore shoulder and was activated from the disabled list May 30 and sent to Triple-A Albuquerque.
