Last Meeting ( Jun 11, 2013 ) Houston 0, Seattle 4

Jeremy Bonderman will try to build off his first victory since 2010 when the Seattle Mariners host the Houston Astros on Wednesday in the finale of their three-game series. Bonderman, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2012 after missing the 2011 season, won his second start after being called up from Triple-A Tacoma. “It’s been a long time, almost three years getting back on the field,'' Bonderman told the Seattle Times. "So, feeling you can compete and hold your own feels really good.’’

The Astros have lost six straight and could provide Bonderman another boost of confidence. Seattle's offense has benefited from the resurgence of 41-year-old Raul Ibanez, who homered for the second straight game in the Mariners' 4-0 victory Tuesday and has 11 of his team-leading 13 home runs in his last 27 games. Bonderman will oppose Jordan Lyles, who is 2-0 with a 2.05 ERA in his last five starts.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Jordan Lyles (3-1, 4.03 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Jeremy Bonderman (1-1, 6.75)

Lyles, whose loss came against Texas on May 12, yielded two runs and six hits in seven innings in Houston's 4-2 setback at Kansas City on Friday. The 22-year-old Florence, S.C., native has not allowed more than three runs in a game except for the eight he gave up against the Rangers. Lyles has dealt with a lot of traffic on the bases as his 1.41 WHIP attests: he has yielded 49 hits and 14 walks in 44 2/3 innings.

Bonderman allowed one run and three hits in six innings while retiring 14 of the last 15 batters he faced in a 4-1 victory over the New York Yankees on Friday. The 30-year-old Kennewick, Wash., native bounced back from a rough outing in his first start since Oct. 1, 2010, when he yielded seven runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings in a 10-0 loss at Minnesota on June 2. Bonderman, who was 67-77 in eight seasons with Detroit, was 2-4 with a 4.52 ERA in 11 starts at Tacoma.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Astros are on pace to strike out 1,529 times this season, which would shatter the record of 1,387 set by the 2012 Oakland Athletics. Houston has struck out an average of 9.4 times during its first 66 games.

2. The Astros committed two errors Tuesday to increase their major league-leading total to 49.

3. Mariners SS Brendan Ryan committed his fourth error in five games Tuesday and eighth of the season. He had nine in 141 games in 2012.

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
