New York @ Los Angeles preview
Angel Stadium of Anaheim
Last Meeting ( Jun 15, 2013 ) NY Yankees 2, LA Angels 6
The New York Yankees have matched a season worst with five consecutive defeats and their stagnant offense received another blow in Saturday's loss at the Los Angeles Angels. First baseman Mark Teixeira aggravated a wrist injury that caused him to miss the first 53 games of the season and is flying back to New York to be examined by the Yankees' team physician Sunday. Meanwhile, the Angels send Jered Weaver to the mound as they go for a three-game sweep.
Weaver will be opposed by Yankees ace CC Sabathia, who has had trouble maintaining consistency during an up-and-down season. Weaver is trying to regain his form after missing seven weeks with a fractured elbow. He was injured in an outing against the Yankees in May 2012 but returned after a three-week absence and proceeded to win nine consecutive starts. Sabathia won three straight starts in April but has been victorious only three times in his last 10 outings.
TV: 3:35 p.m. ET, YES (New York), Fox Sports West (Los Angeles)
PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees LH CC Sabathia (6-5, 4.07 ERA) vs. Angels RH Jered Weaver (1-2, 3.77)
Sabathia appeared to be reverting to form when he won back-to-back starts and struck out 19 in 16 1/3 innings, but his road woes continued last time out in Oakland. He was knocked around for six runs in six innings while surrendering a pair of homers, raising his total to 14 long balls allowed. Sabathia has compiled a 6-8 record with a 4.22 ERA in 16 career starts against Los Angeles.
Weaver has yet to go past six innings in any of his five starts, a dramatic reversal for a pitcher who compiled seven complete games in the previous two seasons. He ran into sixth-inning trouble last time out in Baltimore, allowing four runs in 5 2/3 innings before rain ended his outing. Weaver is 6-2 with a 4.97 ERA lifetime against the Yankees, but has served up 16 homers in 63 1/3 innings.
