Last Meeting ( Jun 24, 2013 ) Philadelphia 3, San Diego 4

The San Diego Padres will attempt to ride the momentum from their comeback win in the series opener as they continue their three-game set against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. San Diego was three outs away from being blanked before staging a three-run rally in the ninth inning and winning in walkoff fashion in the 10th. Kyle Blanks was the key contributor, delivering a two-run single before scoring the tying run on a passed ball in the ninth and hitting an RBI single with one out in the 10th to win it.

The victory snapped a two-game skid for the Padres during which they scored a total of two runs. Philadelphia dropped to 1-4 over its last five contests as it began a 10-game road trip. The bullpen once again failed the Phillies; closer Jonathan Papelbon suffered his fourth blown save in five opportunities and Justin De Fratus retired just one of five batters he faced in the 10th inning.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Kyle Kendrick (6-4, 3.56 ERA) vs. Padres RH Jason Marquis (9-2, 3.59)

Kendrick is winless in his last three starts but pitched well enough to notch a victory in two of those outings. The 28-year-old limited the Washington Nationals to one run and two hits over 7 2/3 innings last time out, but settled for a no-decision. Kendrick is 2-1 in four career games (three starts) against San Diego despite allowing 10 runs in 16 1/3 frames.

Marquis failed to record his ninth consecutive win Thursday, exiting with a no-decision even though he held the Los Angeles Dodgers to two runs over six innings. The 34-year-old has allowed more than three runs only once in 11 starts since his most recent loss, an April 22 setback against the Milwaukee Brewers in which he surrendered seven runs in 4 2/3 frames. Marquis is 6-8 with a 5.45 ERA in 26 career contests (19 starts) vs. the Phillies.

WALK-OFFS

1. San Diego is 3-2 on its seven-game homestand.

2. Phillies OF John Mayberry Jr. collected three hits Monday after going 3-for-28 over his previous 11 games.

3. Blanks recorded a career-high four hits in the series opener and registered three RBIs for the third time this season.

PREDICTION: Padres 4, Phillies 2

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
