Miami @ Colorado preview

Coors Field

Last Meeting ( Jul 22, 2013 ) Miami 3, Colorado 1

Colorado's 10-game homestand following the All-Star break was supposed to give the Rockies an opportunity to get more involved in the National League West race, but all it's done is provide them another chance to spin their wheels. Colorado on Tuesday looks to improve on its 2-2 record when it hosts the Miami Marlins, who snapped a 37-inning scoreless streak in their 3-1 series-opening victory on Monday. The Rockies remain four games behind the red-hot Los Angeles Dodgers in the division.

Christian Yelich, a five-tool player the Marlins selected 23rd in the 2010 draft, is expected to make his major-league debut Tuesday. The left-handed hitting outfielder had two hits and an RBI in the Futures All-Star Game on July 14 and makes the jump from Double-A Jacksonville. Rookie All-Star Jose Fernandez, the brightest spot in Florida's 36-61 season, takes the ball and opposes Jhoulys Chacin, who is 6-1 with a 3.12 ERA in his last seven outings.

PITCHING MATCHUP:
Marlins RH Jose Fernandez (5-5, 2.75 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Jhoulys Chacin (9-4, 3.50)

Fernandez yielded one run in six innings - his team-high 11th quality start - and received a no-decision in Miami's 2-1 victory over Washington on Saturday. The Cuban, who turns 21 on July 31, has pitched 104 2/3 frames, and manager Mike Redmond said Fernandez will be shut down for the season after 150-170 innings. “They know I love to pitch, love to compete,'' Fernandez told the Miami Herald. "They got a plan and I’m going to follow it 100 percent.”

Chacin bounced back from his first loss since May 16 by allowing one run and striking out six in six innings of a 3-1 victory over the Dodgers at Los Angeles on Sunday. The 25-year-old Venezuelan, whose 3.64 career ERA is the lowest in Rockies history (minimum 75 starts), is 3-0 with a 1.74 ERA in three starts against NL East teams this season. Chacin is 0-3 with a 9.00 ERA in 10 innings covering four games (two starts) against the Marlins, but hasn't faced them since 2011.

WALK-OFFS

1. Fernandez is 2-5 with a 4.17 ERA in nine road starts. He never has faced Colorado.

2. The Rockies are one of two teams in the NL who have three players with 50 or more RBIs - Carlos Gonzalez (66), Michael Cuddyer (56) and Troy Tulowitzki (55). The Cardinals are the other (Allen Craig, 77; Carlos Beltran, 55; Yadier Molina, 51).

3. Miami also is expected to call up OF Jake Marisnick from Double-A Jacksonville. To make room on the roster, the Marlins on Monday optioned 2B Derek Dietrich and OF Marcell Ozuna to Jacksonville.

PREDICTION: Rockies 3, Marlins 2

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
