Arizona @ San Francisco preview
AT&T Park
Last Meeting ( Sep 10, 2014 ) Arizona 0, San Francisco 5
The San Francisco Giants attempt to complete a sweep when they host the Arizona Diamondbacks in the finale of their three-game set Thursday afternoon. San Francisco posted a 5-1 victory in the series opener before four pitchers combined on a two-hitter in a 5-0 triumph Wednesday. Gregor Blanco recorded two hits, including a tiebreaking RBI double during a four-run seventh inning, as the Giants remained 2 1/2 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West.
San Francisco, which extended its season-best home winning streak to eight games, sits atop the NL wild-card standings - 5 1/2 games ahead of both Atlanta and Milwaukee. Jake Lamb recorded both hits for Arizona, which fell to 2-7 on its 10-game road trip. The Diamondbacks have lost five contests in a row, scoring a total of six runs during the slide.
TV: 3:45 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco)
PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Randall Delgado (3-3, 5.40 ERA) vs. Giants RH Jake Peavy (5-13, 4.01)
Delgado will be making his second consecutive start and fourth overall this season. The 24-year-old Panamanian was superb at San Diego last Thursday, allowing just two hits over five scoreless innings en route to victory in his first start since April 10 at San Francisco. Delgado remained 1-1 lifetime against the Giants in that one, escaping with a no-decision after yielding three runs on six hits and three walks in 4 1/3 frames.
Peavy continued his resurgence since being acquired from Boston as he allowed two unearned runs over six innings in a victory at Detroit on Friday. The 33-year-old is just 4-4 in eight starts for San Francisco despite posting a 2.36 ERA after going 1-9 with a 4.72 mark in 20 outings with the Red Sox. Peavy, who has yielded only one earned run over his last three turns and a total of four in his last five starts, is 14-12 in 30 career outings against Arizona.
WALK-OFFS
1. San Francisco 2B Joe Panik was the team's only starting position player without a hit Wednesday after collecting a career-high five in the series opener.
2. The Diamondbacks have been held to fewer than three runs in each loss during their road trip.
3. Arizona returns to the desert to begin a six-game homestand Friday with the opener of a three-game series against San Diego, while the Giants remain in San Francisco for a crucial three-game set versus the Dodgers.
