Last Meeting ( Aug 27, 2013 ) San Diego 9, Arizona 10

The Arizona Diamondbacks remain in contention for a wild card spot in the National League but they are not making it easy on themselves. Arizona blew leads of four and two runs in the final two innings before prevailing in 10 innings Tuesday and will go for a three-game sweep of the visiting San Diego Padres on Wednesday night. Arizona earned its major league-leading 28th one-run win but has 26 blown saves, which also is tops in the majors.

The Diamondbacks are riding a five-game home win streak and trail Cincinnati by five games for the second wild card. Right fielder Will Venable is batting .452 during a seven-game hitting streak and has hit in 22 of 23 games, including a trio of three-hit performances in the past five. Third baseman Chase Headley has hit in 10 of 11 games but will likely sit out the series finale after he was forced to leave Tuesday's game due to back spasms.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres LH Robbie Erlin (1-2, 7.15 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks LH Wade Miley (9-8, 3.60)

Erlin will be recalled from Triple-A Tucson to start in place of nine-game winner Edinson Volquez, who was released Tuesday. Erlin has made six appearances (four starts) for San Diego this season and lost his last two outings in early July, failing to go past four innings in each. Control was an issue in the last two starts for Erlin, who walked seven and struck out four over 7 2/3 innings.

Miley is 3-0 over his last six outings and has three straight no-decisions, including a six-inning stint last time out when he gave up three runs on five hits. He went eight innings in his previous start at Pittsburgh, limiting the Pirates to two runs and seven hits. Miley has been battered by the Padres throughout his career, losing all three starts this season to fall to 1-5 with 6.57 ERA against them.

WALK-OFFS

1. Diamondbacks 3B Martin Prado has 11 RBIs in his last four games and 30 in the month of August - tops in the majors.

2. Padres 1B Yonder Alonso is 3-for-5 with a three-run homer against Miley.

3. Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt drove in his National League-leading 104th run, the most by a Diamondback since Luis Gonzalez had 104 in 2003.

PREDICTION: Diamondbacks 6, Padres 4

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
