SALT LAKE CITY -- Rookie guard Donovan Mitchell scored a career-high 22 points and Ricky Rubio added 21 to lead the Utah Jazz to a 96-81 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday night.
Derrick Favors added 14 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season for Utah.
The Jazz (3-3) never trailed from start to finish and won their fifth straight regular-season game over the Lakers. Utah made 13 3-pointers to stay a step ahead for four quarters.
Brandon Ingram scored 16 points and Jordan Clarkson added 15 off the bench to lead Los Angeles. The Lakers (2-4) suffered their first road loss this season after making just 31 of 81 shots from the field (38.3 percent).
Utah used hot perimeter shooting to take control out of the gate. The Jazz were 5 of 11 (45.5) from outside during the quarter. It helped Utah string together a 16-3 run and take a 21-7 lead.
Rubio and Rodney Hood opened the spurt with back-to-back baskets. Mitchell capped it with a jumper.
The Lakers struggled to find their shot until the second quarter. Los Angeles was 7 of 22 from the field in the first 12 minutes. That included a 1-of-7 clip from the perimeter.
Even after Los Angeles started shooting better, it still wasn't enough to make a serious dent in Utah's lead until late in the third quarter. At that point, the Lakers had trimmed their deficit to 70-64 on a 3-pointer from Kyle Kuzma.
Mitchell answered with a thunderous tip-dunk and a 3-pointer on back-to-back possessions to put the Jazz up 75-64 heading into the fourth quarter.
Los Angeles hung around in the fourth quarter and pulled within 77-72 after Corey Brewer drove for a layup. That's as close as the Lakers came.
Utah got some breathing room again on a 3-pointer from Rubio and kept adding to the lead until going back up 91-79 on another 3-pointer from Mitchell with 1:47 remaining.

Kuzma played at the University of Utah for three seasons, averaging 10.1 points and 5.5 rebounds in 96 career games before Los Angeles drafted him 27th overall in June. ... Jazz G Donovan Mitchell was 13 of 52 (.250) from the field in his first five games before going 9 of 16 against the Lakers. ... Los Angeles PG Lonzo Ball led NBA rookies with 8.4 assists per game coming into Saturday. Ball had just four against Utah.
