BOSTON -- The Boston Celtics lost Kyrie Irving but rallied from 18 points down in the second half and captured their 11th straight victory, roaring past the Charlotte Hornets and hanging on for a 90-87 victory on Friday night.
With Gordon Hayward out for the season and Al Horford sitting out a second straight game with a concussion, Irving, the third member of the new Big Three, went down with a possible concussion less than two minutes into the game -- the result of an errant elbow from teammate Aron Baynes.
Boston (11-2) went on to a season-low 11 points in the first quarter and was down 18 early in the third before sending the Hornets (5-7) to their fourth straight loss that completed an 0-4 road trip.
With journeyman guard Shane Larkin leading the way, the Celtics went on a 14-2 fourth-quarter run to take control of the game and held the Hornets to 11 points in the fourth quarter. But the home team still had to survive a scramble at the end to survive.
Larkin finished with a season-high 16 points in 17:21, while rookie Jayson Tatum, playing after leaving the previous game with an ankle injury, scored 16 points, Terry Rozier totaled 15 points seven rebounds and four assists, Marcus Morris had 14 and seven rebounds and Jaylen Brown 10 points and 13 rebounds.
The Celtics won even though Brown, Rozier and Marcus Smart combined to go 9-for-42 from the floor, 4 of 17 from 3-point range.
Kemba Walker, who missed a jumper that would have put his team ahead with five seconds left, scored Charlotte's last eight points.
Walker led all scorers with 20 points despite 5 of 19 shooting, 0-for-6 from 3-point range. He also had 11 assists and five rebounds.
Frank Kaminsky scored all 14 of his points in the first half, Dwayne Bacon had 10 points and Dwight Howard 11 rebounds in the loss.
Howard was 2-for-8 from the floor and 2-for-9 from the foul line, turning the ball over seven times.
It was Boston's fifth straight win over Charlotte.
