Courtney Ramey scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting and Jericho Sims added 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Longhorns defeated visiting California Baptist 67-54 on Tuesday in Austin, Texas.
The Longhorns (3-0), coming off a big road win at Purdue on Saturday, were ice cold from the field to start the game but still did enough to lead by four at the break. Texas warmed up in the second half, shooting 64 percent after halftime.
The Lancers (2-1) were within 57-50 after a dunk by Zach Pirog with 3:45 to play then went 1-for-7 the rest of the way, allowing Texas to pull away. The Longhorns hit all four of their shots down the stretch and held California Baptist without a field goal for the final 3:14 of the game.
Andrew Jones added 11 points off the bench for the Longhorns in the win.
Milan Acquaah scored 17 points to lead California Baptist, with Ferron Flavors Jr. adding 14 points. The Lancers were just 6 of 16 from the free throw line, however.
California Baptist outshot the Longhorns 34.6 percent to 28.6 percent in the first half but Texas led 26-22 after Ramey's layup with 29 seconds to play. The Longhorns were just 2 of 16 from 3-point range over the first 20 minutes, with Jones leading Texas with just 6 points in the half.
Acquaah paced all scorers with 8 points in the half but the Lancers missed five of their six free throws and never led.
A 9-0 run to begin the second half put Texas in command for a while but the Lancers fought back to within 50-47 on a 3-pointer by Flavors with 7:23 to play. The Longhorns answered with a 3-pointer by Jase Febres and a putback dunk by Sims.
California Baptist is a member of the Western Athletic Conference and is in just its second season as a Division I member.
