"We really didn't have it together at the start of the second half, but the beautiful thing is there was plenty of time," Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said. "We stayed the course, got better ball movement and better shots."
D'Mitrik Trice led the Badgers (12-9, 5-5) with 16 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Nate Reuvers added 13 points.
Wisconsin guard Kobe King did not play against the Hawkeyes because he was attending to a personal matter.
Badgers forward Micah Potter, who finished with seven points and six rebounds, left the game with just under four minutes remaining because of a lower-body injury.
The Badgers opened the second half by scoring six straight points in an 8-2 run to seize a 38-32 lead following a jumper by Reuvers. Garza helped bring the Hawkeyes back with six Iowa straight points to cut the deficit to 38-36. The Badgers pulled away by scoring seven points in a row for a 45-36 edge after a Trevor Anderson layup.
Garza made two free throws to make the score 57-57 with 2:19 remaining. Wisconsin's Brevin Pritzl broke the tie with a spin move in the lane to end Iowa's 12-0 run and give the Badgers a 59-57 edge with 1:47 left.
Toussaint countered with a 3-footer in traffic in the lane and added a free throw for a 60-59 Iowa lead with 1:20 left. Wieskamp scored on a finger-roll layup to increase the lead to 62-59 with 34 seconds remaining to cap a 17-2 run.
Wisconsin's Brad Davison was whistled for a flagrant-1 foul on a hook trying to avoid a screen that led to Wieskamp's basket. McCaffery made 1 of 2 free throws to extend the Iowa lead to 63-59. Garza was fouled on the subsequent possession and made one foul shot. McCaffery sealed the win with two free throws with 14 seconds left.
