Anthony Cowan scored a career-high 31 points and Jalen Smith added 18 points and 14 rebounds as No. 15 Maryland held off No. 18 Iowa 82-72 Thursday night in College Park, Md.
The Terrapins (17-4, 7-3 Big Ten) ran their home record to 12-0 this season before a crowd of 16,369. Maryland, which has won four straight games, is now 5-0 in Big Ten Conference home contests.
Iowa (15-6, 6-4) had a five-game winning streak snapped as Maryland avenged a 67-49 loss at Iowa on Jan. 10. Foul-plagued Luka Garza led Iowa with 21 points, and Joe Wieskamp, who had 26 points in that first meeting, finished with 17.
The Terrapins had a tenuous 42-39 lead when Garza scored inside with 16:07 left, but Maryland ran off three straight baskets to push to the biggest margin of the game to that point at 48-39 on Aaron Wiggins' layup at 14:08. The Hawkeyes cut their deficit back to three two times, the last at 9:45 when Wieskamp scored inside to make it 52-49.
This time Maryland answered with 10 straight points on a dunk by Smith, then 3-pointers by Eric Ayala and Wiggins, and two Cowan free throws to make it 62-49 at 6:17. Cowan added six assists and six rebounds. Wiggins finished with 14 points. Smith equaled a career high with five blocked shots and earned his 12th double-double this season.
Maryland had shot 48.3 percent (14-of-29) to lead 36-32 at the half. Iowa had led by many as six points, but the Terrapins scratched back to take a 32-30 lead at 2:16 on a Cowan 3-pointer, part of a 12-point half for him.
In the first meeting in Iowa, the Hawkeyes shot out to a 38-24 halftime lead, burying the Terrapins with six first-half threes. Maryland was just 4 of 22 behind the arc that night, but had four in the first 20 minutes this time. The Terrapins, who entered the game last in the Big Ten at 31.9 percent from 3-point range, were 7 of 25 behind the arc.
Iowa finished 8 of 24 from deep, and shot just 36.2 percent (25 of 69) overall.
The Hawkeyes return home Feb. 2 to host No. 19 Illinois. Maryland stays home to meet No. 25 Rutgers on Feb 4.
