Luther Muhammad led five Ohio State players in double figures as the No. 25 Buckeyes ended the nine-game winning streak of No. 7 Maryland, 79-72, at Columbus, Ohio, on Sunday.
Kaleb Wesson had 15 points, Duane Washington Jr. scored 13, and C.J. Walker and Andre Wesson each had 12 for the Buckeyes (18-9, 8-8 Big Ten), who have won six of eight games.
Trailing by as many as 14 in the second half, Aaron Wiggins' 3-pointer pulled the Terrapins to within 76-72 with 32 seconds left before Muhammad made two free throws, giving the Buckeyes 20 straight makes from the line, for a 78-72 advantage with 22 seconds left.
Washington made another with 14 seconds left before a miss. OSU made 23 of 28 (82.1 percent) free throws.
Wiggins led the Terrapins (22-5, 12-4) with 20 points and Eric Ayala added 16.
Maryland lost a chance to take a three-game lead over Iowa, Michigan State, Penn State and Wisconsin with four games left.
Anthony Cowan Jr. had 10 points for Maryland before fouling out with 3:54 to play. Donta Scott also had 10 points.
Ohio State was up 64-59 after Cowan made a layup but Cowan was called for a technical for his fifth foul after kicking at Kaleb Wesson when Wesson fell on him after the shot. Washington made both free throws to make it 66-59.
Maryland first got within four, 68-64, on a 3-pointer by Wiggins with 2:42 left.
The Terrapins' Jalen Smith was going for his 10th straight double-digit but foul trouble limited him to two points and four rebounds in 11 minutes of the first half. He finished with eight points and seven rebounds.
Ohio State lost starting junior forward Kyle Young to a right ankle injury going for a rebound with 4:14 left in the first half.
Maryland plays at Minnesota on Wednesday.
Ohio State is on the road versus Nebraska on Thursday.
