The Washington State Cougars used a 19-2 run early in the second half to defeat the Old Dominion Monarchs 66-50 on Tuesday in a losers' bracket game at the Cayman Islands Classic.
C.J. Elleby led Washington State with 21 points. Marvin Cannon scored 14 off the bench for the Cougars.
Washington State (3-3) and Old Dominion (3-4) played a tight first half in which neither team led by more than four points. The Cougars took a 30-28 lead at intermission when Jeff Pollard hit a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left.
Washington State led Old Dominion 35-34 with 18 minutes left in the second half. The Cougars then went on a 19-2 run over the next eight minutes, leading 54-36 lead before Jason Wade made two free throws with 10:45 remaining.
Elleby started the run with a 3-pointer and made two others during the spurt.
Old Dominion never recovered from that prolonged drought and trailed by as many as 21 points. The Monarchs shot 30.8 percent in the second half (8 of 26).
Pollard and Jervae Robinson each chipped in 10 points for Washington State. The Cougars committed just seven turnovers.
Old Dominion's Xavier Green carried the Monarchs with 20 points on 8-of-18 shooting, including 4 of 8 from 4-point range. Marquis Godwin added 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting. While Green and Godwin combined to shoot 12 of 26 from the field, their teammates went 6 of 28.
The Monarchs managed just five assists for the game, an indication of how rarely they created good shots in their half-court offense. ODU finished the game 18 of 54 from the field (33.3 percent).
