Eli Brooks scored 24 points, and Michigan delivered a huge second-half run to beat No. 6 North Carolina 73-64 on Thursday afternoon in a semifinal of the Battle 4 Atlantis at Imperial Arena at Paradise Island, Bahamas.
Michigan (6-0) will meet No. 8 Gonzaga on Friday in the championship game. North Carolina (5-1) will take on No. 11 Oregon in the third-place game.
Brooks, a junior guard, shot 9-for-14 from the field, making four 3-pointers. Isaiah Livers added 12 points, David DeJulius had 11 points, and Jon Teske recorded 10 points and eight rebounds for the Wolverines.
Freshman guard Cole Anthony scored 22 points for North Carolina while Garrison Brooks provided 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Anthony scored 12 of his points in the first half.
Michigan began the second half with a 21-2 burst, and then had to withstand a charge from North Carolina.
The Wolverines held a 60-36 lead, but that was reduced to 66-54 with more than five minutes remaining. The Tar Heels had the gap down to 69-61 before missing their next three shots.
Brooks answered with a 3-pointer that restored a double-digit lead with 1:12 remaining.
Michigan outscored North Carolina by 33-6 beyond the 3-point arc. The Wolverines connected on 11 of 26 long-range shots, while the Tar Heels were 2-for-13.
Brooks had nine of his points during the opening spurt early in the second half.
North Carolina entered the game leading the country in rebounding margin at plus-21.4 per game. In this game, the Tar Heels held only a 36-34 advantage on the boards.
Michigan led 39-34 at halftime, boosted by 51.7 percent shooting from the field.
This is North Carolina's second trip to the Battle 4 Atlantis, and the Tar Heels also failed to win the championship there five years ago.
Michigan also defeated North Carolina last Nov. 28, with a 17-point margin in Ann Arbor, Mich. The all-time series is now tied at four wins apiece.
