Greg Brown scored 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as No. 11 Texas shrugged off a ragged start, rallied and then held on for a 77-74 win over Oklahoma State on Sunday afternoon in Big 12 Conference play in Austin, Texas.
Brown racked up eight straight points for the Longhorns midway through the first half as Texas turned a four-point deficit into a 49-42 lead. The Longhorns continued what Brown started, eventually forging a 17-0 run that staked them to a 55-42 lead from which Oklahoma State would not recover.
The Cowboys pulled to within four points on a layup off a steal by Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe with 1:25 to play and to within two points in the final seconds but it was not enough.
It was the third double-double of Brown's eight-game college career and the seventh time he's been in double-figure scoring. Andrew Jones added 22 points for Texas (7-1, 1-0 Big 12) while Matt Coleman III scored 15.
Cade Cunningham, the Cowboys' freshman star, led all scorers with 25 points. Bryce Williams added 13 for Oklahoma State (6-2, 0-2) and Avery Anderson III hit for 11.
Neither team played well over the first 10 minutes of the first half, but the Cowboys gained the upper hand and a 15-9 advantage with stout defense that forced Texas into 4 of 17 shooting that included misses on its first six 3-point attempts.
The Longhorns used a 6-0 run to claw back into a 15-15 tie on a 3-pointer by Brown with 9:20 to play in the half and then took a 18-17 lead on Kai Jones' 3-pointer at the 7:59 mark. But Oklahoma State grabbed the momentum through the final stretch, ending the half on a 14-6 run to assume a 34-29 lead at the break.
Cunningham and Williams led the Cowboys with seven points each by halftime, while Jones paced all scorers in the first half with 12 points.
Oklahoma State outshot the Longhorns 48 percent to 32 percent over the first 20 minutes and forced Texas into nine first-half turnovers.
