Andrew Jones scored 16 points and nailed a 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds remaining to lift visiting No. 4 Texas to a thrilling come-from-behind 72-70 win over No. 14 West Virginia on Saturday afternoon in a Big 12 Conference dustup in Morgantown, W.Va.
Texas trailed from midway through the first half and was 0 for 6 from beyond the arc in the second half before Jones' game winner. The Longhorns (10-1, 4-0 Big 12) scored the game's final seven points and have won six straight contests.
West Virginia was up 66-63 before the Longhorns' Courtney Ramey hit a pair of free throws with 2:33 to play to cut the lead to one point. Emmitt Matthews Jr. answered with a pair of free throws, and after a Texas miss, Taz Sherman hit a jumper to stretch the advantage to 70-65 with 1:41 remaining.
Two Matt Coleman III free throws and a layup by Ramey brought the Longhorns to within 70-69 with 55 seconds left to set the stage for Jones' heroics.
Ramey led all scorers with 19 points, with Coleman adding 13, Greg Brown scoring 12 points and taking 14 rebounds, and Kai Jones hitting for 10 for Texas.
Sherman scored 17 points to pace the Mountaineers (9-4, 2-3). Derek Culver and Sean McNeil each scored 14 points, and Miles McBride added 12. Culver hauled in a game-high 16 rebounds, recording his seventh double-double of the season.
The Mountaineers trailed early on but used eight straight points off the bench from Sherman to forge a 10-0 run that garnered them an 18-13 lead with 13:13 to play in the first half. Texas answered with a 6-0 spurt of its own to jump back in front at 19-18, but the rest of the half belonged to West Virginia, which went to halftime up 40-36.
Sherman led all scorers at the half with 13 points, while Culver had eight points and eight rebounds. Texas was paced by Andrew Jones' 11 points and got nine points over the first 20 minutes from Ramey.
