Seton Hall's Takal Molson missed the last of three free-throw attempts after he was fouled attempting a 3-pointer with 0.7 seconds left as Louisville held on to win 71-70 Friday in a Wade Phillips Tipoff Classic game at Louisville, Ky.
Molson was fouled by Louisville's Quinn Slazinski as Slazinski tried to avoid Molson's fall after taking the shot.
Radford graduate transfer Carlik Jones had 18 points, 11 rebounds and six assists to lead Louisville. Dre Davis and Jae'Lyn Withers added 11 points and Slazinski had 10.
Sandro Mamukelashvili led Seton Hall with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Withers' drive with 1:31 left in regulation put Louisville ahead 67-66.
After failed possessions by both teams, Seton Hall's Jared Rhoden was fouled on a defensive rebound attempt. Rhoden, who finished with 11 points, made two free throws with 40 seconds left to give the Pirates a 68-67 lead.
J.J. Traynor put back his own miss with 19 seconds left to put Louisville back up 69-68.
Seton Hall, playing its season opener after a recent 14-day COVID-19 pause, missed on two attempted layups on its next possession.
Traynor grabbed the defensive board and was fouled. He made both free throws with 5.1 seconds left to give Louisville a 71-68 lead.
Molson was fouled in the game-ending sequence. Molson made the first two at the line, but missed the third with Louisville (2-0) surviving.
The game was close for most of the first half after Seton Hall turned a seven-point deficit into a 28-25 lead with 5:48 left until halftime following a 10-0 run by the Pirates.
The game was tied at 38 at the half with Jones leading all scorers with 11 points after making all five of his free-throw attempts and 3-of-8 shots from the field.
Louisville, which opened the second half outscoring Seton Hall 10-1, took a 56-46 lead with 12:15 left in regulation.
Seton Hall went on an 11-0 run, behind 3-pointers by Shavar Reynolds and Rhoden, to tie the game at 60 with 4:49 left.
