Darryl Morsell finished with a team-high 19 points to help shorthanded Maryland upset No. 12 Illinois 66-63 on Sunday night at Champaign, Ill.
Donta Scott poured in 16 points as well for the Terrapins (7-6, 2-5 Big Ten), who also defeated then-No. 6 Wisconsin on Dec. 28.
Scott missed a free throw to give the Illini (9-4, 5-2) one last chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but Ayo Dosunmu missed a tying 3-point attempt as time expired.
Dosunmu led Illinois with 23 points and eight rebounds, but was held to seven points in the first half on 2-of-11 shooting.
Hakim Hart's 3-pointer gave Maryland the lead for good with 1:20 left and Morsell followed it up with a runner with 33.3 seconds remaining.
Aaron Wiggins also hit two free throws down the stretch and finished with 12 points as Maryland persevered despite playing without junior guard Eric Ayala (team-best 14.0 points per game), who sat out with a groin injury.
Hart finished with nine points and went 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
The Terrapins snapped a three-game losing streak.
Illinois finished with 15 assists and shot 41 percent (25 for 61) while Maryland shot 40 percent (22 for 55) and made 8 of its 20 3-point attempts.
Kofi Cockburn stood out for the Illini once again with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Da'Monte Williams finished with nine rebounds and five assists for Illinois, but missed a pair of free throws with 52 seconds left that could have given the Illini the lead.
Trailing 64-61 after Morsell's layup, Andre Curbelo missed a fade-away jumper in the paint and Scott collected the rebound, drawing a foul with 17.9 seconds left. After inbounding the ball, Wiggins was fouled with 17.1 seconds left and he proceeded to hit two free throws.
