Luka Garza had 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 11 Iowa to a 74-68 win over Penn State in a Big Ten contest on Sunday at Iowa City.
On a basket with 8:18 remaining that gave Iowa a 56-54 lead, Garza also became the school's all-time leading scorer. He passed school legend Roy Marble (2,116 from 1985-89) and finished the game with a career total of 2,126.
CJ Fredrick scored 18 points and Joe Wieskamp added 11 to lead Iowa (17-6, 11-5 Big Ten), which won its fourth straight game.
The Hawkeyes won despite committing 16 turnovers and going just 12 of 22 from the free-throw line.
Iowa did have a big advantage on the boards, outrebounding Penn State 46-35.
Izaiah Brockington and Myreon Jones each scored 11 points and Myles Dread added 10 points in defeat for Penn State (7-12, 4-11), which has lost four straight and five of its last six.
The Nittany Lions shot 35.5 percent (22 of 62) from the field. The Hawkeyes shot 44.8 (26 of 58).
Penn State held a 41-36 lead at halftime and then took a 49-42 lead with 17:10 remaining in the game before Iowa made a run.
The Hawkeyes countered with a 12-2 run to take a 54-51 lead with 12:26 left.
With the game tied at 54-54, Iowa went on a 13-2 run to take a 67-56 lead with 5:28 remaining.
Penn State did rally, cutting Iowa's lead to 70-65 with 1:20 remaining, but that was as close as the Nittany Lions could get.
Iowa jumped out to a 19-6 lead in the first 6:11 of the game, but Penn State seized control for the remainder of the first half.
The Nittany Lions went on a 10-0 run to cut Iowa's lead to 19-16 and then took a 26-25 lead with 5:39 to go until halftime.
Penn State later went on a 9-0 run to take a 39-33 lead with 51 seconds left in the first half.
