Keve Aluma and Justyn Mutts each notched double-doubles Wednesday night to lead No. 20 Virginia Tech to a 62-51 Atlantic Coast Conference win over host Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
Aluma delivered 14 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots for the Hokies (12-3, 6-2 ACC), while Mutts scored 14 points and hauled in 11 rebounds, also adding three blocks.
Virginia Tech earned a 46-36 advantage on the boards, giving up just four offensive caroms on 42 missed shots.
Nahiem Alleyne paced four Hokies in extra digits with 15 points and Hunter Cattoor came off the bench to add 13. It was Virginia Tech's first game without second-leading scorer Tyrece Radford, serving an indefinite suspension after being charged with DUI and carrying a concealed weapon Sunday morning.
Prentiss Hubb scored a game-high 22 points for the Fighting Irish (5-9, 2-6), but went just 8 of 20 from the field. The team's leading scorer, Nate Laszewski, finished with more turnovers (5) than field-goal attempts (4) in 37 minutes, tallying only seven points.
Notre Dame canned only 20 of 56 attempts from the field as its modest two-game winning streak ended.
Notre Dame got the game's first bucket just 1:07 in on a Juwan Durham jumper and then went ice cold. The Irish limped more than five minutes before scoring again, enabling Virginia Tech to settle in even though it was also having problems finding the range.
A three-point play by Aluma at the 11:16 mark gave the Hokies their first double-figure lead at 15-5. Cattoor splashed one of his four first-half 3-pointers with 5:10 left, upping the margin to 25-10.
At that stage, Notre Dame finally found a little traction while Virginia Tech's offense cooled. Hubb capped a half-ending 9-3 burst by canning two free throws after time expired, allowing the Irish to head for the locker room trailing just 31-22.
Neither team made more than 33.3 percent of its field goals, but the Hokies carved out key advantages in rebounding (22-19) and points off turnovers (9-2).
