D.J. Carton scored 14 points to lead Marquette to a 73-71 win at St. John's in a Big East contest on Saturday.
With the game tied at 71-71 in the final minute, Koby McEwen drove the lane and hit a left-handed floater with 27 seconds remaining to give Marquette the go-ahead score.
St. John's had a chance to win after an inbounds pass from underneath its own basket with 1.9 seconds left, but a 3-pointer in the corner by Julian Champagnie bounced off of the rim as time expired.
Justin Lewis and Greg Elliott each scored 13 points and Dawson Garcia added 11 points for Marquette (8-6, 4-4).
Champagnie led all scorers with 20 points and Greg Williams, Jr. added 15 points in defeat for St. John's (7-7, 2-6).
Marquette committed 19 turnovers, but shot 46.4 percent from the field and outrebounded St. John's 42-36.
St. John's shot 37.7 percent from the field (26 of 69).
St. John's held a 58-56 lead with 9:09 remaining before Marquette countered with a 7-0 run to take a 63-58 lead with 7:09 to go.
But St. John's had a response, answering with an 8-2 run to take a 66-65 lead with 4:25 left.
Trailing 41-30 at halftime and 51-41 with 15:01 remaining in the game, St. John's made a big move, going on a 12-0 run in a span of 1:47 to take a 53-51 lead with 13:14 left.
After a close first 11 minutes, Marquette surged ahead over the last 8:34 of the first half.
Marquette went on an 8-0 run to take a 25-16 lead with 6:47 left in the first half, and then ultimately ended the first half on a 7-1 run to take a 41-30 lead at halftime.
