Marcus Bagley converted a layup with 8:03 remaining in the game to give host Arizona State the lead for good and the Sun Devils went on to snap a six-game losing streak with a 72-68 victory over California in a Pacific-12 Conference men's basketball game Thursday night.
Remy Martin had 19 points, Jalen Graham 12 and Josh Christopher 11 as the Sun Devils (5-8, 2-5) won for the first time since beating Grand Canyon in a nonconference game on Dec. 13.
Matt Bradley had a game-high 26 points but shot just 8-for-20 for Cal (7-11, 2-9), which lost its third straight.
After Cal led 30-29 at halftime, the second half featured three lead changes and six ties before Bagley's hoop off a Jaelen House assist left the Golden Bears behind for good.
The Sun Devils went on to lead by as many as seven after two free throws by Martin with 1:40 to go.
Bradley hit a foul shot and two hoops in the final minute, but they weren't enough to overcome the deficit.
Arizona State won despite shooting just 3-for-14 on 3-pointers and getting outscored 21-9 from beyond the arc. Christopher accounted for all three of the Sun Devils' long-range hoops in seven attempts.
Graham made six of his eight shots and Kimani Lawrence went 4-for-4 en route to nine points, helping the Sun Devils finish at 50.0 percent from the field.
Lawrence also had a team-high eight rebounds for Arizona State.
Andre Kelly backed Bradley with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for Cal, which was swept by Arizona State in the season series. The Sun Devils won 70-62 in Berkeley, Calif., in early December.
Bradley completed a double-double with 10 rebounds.
Coming off consecutive losses to rival Arizona, the Sun Devils scored 17 of the game's first 22 points to go up 12 before the midpoint of the first half. Bagley ignited the fast start with a three-point play just 13 seconds into the contest.
Cal rallied into a 30-29 halftime lead by scoring eight of the period's final 10 points. Kelly provided the last two hoops, including a go-ahead layup in the final minute.
