Rodrigue Andela backed down his defender and made a go-ahead layup with 24 seconds remaining as host Oregon State outlasted Portland State 67-62 in a nonconference game Tuesday night in Corvallis, Ore.
Jarod Lucas made two free three throws with 13 seconds left and Warith Alatishe added two more with three seconds to go to clinch the victory.
Lucas and Zach Reichle each scored 15 points and Alatishe added 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Beavers (4-3), who maintained a semblance of state bragging rights. Oregon State had already lost to the University of Portland at home this season and have two Paci-12 Conference games remaining against No. 25 Oregon.
James Scott led the Vikings (1-3) with 16 points. Paris Dawson added 13 and Khalid Thomas scored 11.
After Andela's basket, the Vikings had a chance to regain the lead, but Amari McCray was called for an illegal screen 25 feet from the basket.
Portland State fouled Lucas on the ensuing inbounds pass and he made the free throws for a 65-62 advantage with 13 seconds remaining.
A potential tying 3-pointer by Dawson on a turnaround jumper came up short and Alatishe grabbed the rebound.
After trailing 32-17 at halftime, the Vikings used a 14-2 run early in the second half to pull within 45-43.
Oregon State pulled back out front by nine points on Lucas' 3-pointer with 7:49 left before Portland State rallied again.
Scott capped a 13-2 run with a three-point play with 4:00 left, giving the Vikings a 59-57 lead.
Oregon State shot just 37.7 percent from the field (20 of 53).
The Beavers were actually better from 3-point range, making 8 of 21 attempts. Portland State shot 42.9 percent (21 of 49). The Beavers had an 18-5 advantage in points off turnovers, forcing 15.
