Adama Sanogo notched his fifth double-double of the season as No. 24 UConn toppled visiting No. 18 Marquette 80-72 on Tuesday night to snap a two-game losing streak.
The 6-foot-9 Sanogo poured in 24 points and 15 rebounds on 9-of-18 shooting to help the Huskies (16-6, 7-4 Big East) complete the regular-season sweep over the Golden Eagles. Tyrese Martin contributed 18 points and 15 rebounds, and R.J. Cole had nine points on 3-of-11 shooting.
UConn scored at will, shooting 47.4 percent from the field, 42.9 percent from deep and 87 percent from the charity stripe.
Olivier-Maxence Prosper paced Marquette (16-8, 8-5) with 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting. Reserve Greg Elliott added 17, and so did Justin Lewis, who also recorded nine rebounds. Darryl Morsell was held to nine points on 3-of-12 shooting.
The Golden Eagles almost came all the way back thanks to an 8-0 run and an eight-minute stretch in the second half where UConn did not make a field goal. Marquette had pulled within one after trailing by 11, but then went ice cold, missing 11 consecutive field goals.
UConn never surrendered its lead and found itself out front for the final 28:51 of play.
The Huskies' efficient first-half shooting performance sent them into halftime with a 46-36 advantage. They made good on 20 of 34 shots from the field (58.8 percent) and five of eight shots from 3-point range (62.5 percent).
Sanogo dominated down low, posting 14 points on 7-of-13 shooting, and Martin was a point shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Elliott and Prosper each went for 10 points, but Lewis was held to just four on 2-of-8 shooting. The Golden Eagles also struggled on the glass and were outrebounded 22-11 before the break.
Prosper got off to a fast start, scoring 10 of Marquette's first 18 points. He made his first four shot attempts and also added three rebounds through the first 10 minutes of action.
