Jared Rhoden scored 12 of his team-high 21 points from the free throw line and No. 21 Seton Hall avoided a upset, scraping by Cal 62-59 in the third-place game of the Fort Myers (Fla.) Tip-Off.
Grant Anticevich sank several big shots down the stretch for Cal to take leads at 49-46, 51-49 and 54-51. Seton Hall fought back to tie it at 59, and Alexis Yetna made one of two foul shots with 1:05 left to put the Pirates up for good.
Yetna and Tyrese Samuel added 10 points apiece for Seton Hall (4-1). Yetna and Rhoden each grabbed seven rebounds.
Anticevich was responsible for 10 straight points for the Golden Bears and finished with 15. Andre Kelly shot 7-for-8 and posted a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds for Cal (2-4).
Kelly hit Cal's first three baskets of the game on jumpers. He drew a foul on the third one and made it 7-4 Bears on the ensuing free throw.
The Pirates got into the game with an 11-2 run, powered in part by four points from Kadary Richmond and a Rhoden 3-pointer. That gave them their largest advantage of the half, 21-13.
But they missed their final eight field goals of the half and scored just six points on free throws over the final eight minutes, allowing Cal to creep within 27-25 at halftime.
Seton Hall made just 7 of 26 shots in the first half and 1 of 10 from 3-point range.
Anticevich made a jumper and a 3-pointer on back-to-back possessions for a 49-46 Cal lead. The Pirates tied it at 49 and 51 following another bucket from Anticevich. His corner 3 made it 54-51 with 5:07 to play before Hall made its comeback.
Rhoden and Bryce Aiken chipped away at the lead from the foul line. Then, Aiken drained his only 3 of the game to put the Pirates ahead 57-56. After two Kelly free throws, Seton Hall's Richmond beat his defender to drive the pain for a layup.
Cal outrebounded Seton Hall 36-30 and made 44.9 percent from the floor in the loss.
