Terquavion Smith scored 24 points and host North Carolina State upset No. 16 Duke 84-60 on Wednesday night in Raleigh, N.C.
N.C. State snapped a three-game losing streak to Duke. The margin of victory was just three points shy of the Wolfpack's biggest ever over the Blue Devils -- a 27-point win in 1972.
Smith shot 8 of 19 for the Wolfpack (12-4, 2-3 ACC) and also had three rebounds. Jarkel Joiner added 21 points and nine assists, while DJ Burns Jr. chipped in 18 points off the bench.
Duke (11-4, 2-2) was led by Kyle Filipowski's 14 points and eight rebounds. Dariq Whitehead added 12 points while Ryan Young had 11. By scoring margin, it was the worst loss of the season for the Blue Devils.
N.C. State jumped out to a commanding 15-0 lead and extended that advantage to 24-7 by the eight-minute mark in the first half. Smith had seven points during that span for the Wolfpack while Burns added six.
Duke missed its first 11 shots and sank just seven field goals in the opening half.
By halftime, the Wolfpack led the Blue Devils by 22 points. Duke shot just 29.2 percent in the half and turned the ball over 13 times -- which N.C. State flipped into 13 points. In an act of desperation, Duke used three fouls at the end of the half to try to stop N.C. State from scoring, but Joiner flushed a 3-pointer anyway.
N.C. State grew its lead to 29 points in the second half. Duke finished with 21 turnovers.
For the game, the Blue Devils made just five 3-pointers while the Wolfpack flushed 10 shots from behind the arc.
