Quinten Post scored a career-high 31 points and had a game-high 11 rebounds to lead Boston College to an 89-70 victory over visiting Fairfield on Monday night at Chestnut Hill, Mass.
Post, a 7-foot senior, was 11 of 14 from the field (5 of 6 from 3-point range) and made four of his five free throw attempts in the season opener for both teams. He was named the Atlantic Coast Conference's Most Improved Player last season, when he averaged a team-high 15.1 points per game.
Post was selected to the 2023-24 Preseason All-ACC second team.
Guard Brycen Goodine, who previously played at Syracuse and Providence, led Fairfield in scoring with 22 points. Michael Rogan added 18 points for the Stags.
Fairfield was without four players due to injury, including guard Caleb Fields and 6-8 forward Alexis Yetna. Fields, a transfer from Bowling Green, started 28 of 29 games last season, when he averaged 11.7 points per game. Yetna transferred from Seton Hall and led the Pirates in rebounding during the 2021-22 season (7.6).
Jaeden Zackery tossed in 10 points for the Eagles, which improved to 29-11 all-time against Fairfield.
Despite shooting 35 percent (12 of 34) from the field through the first 20 minutes, Fairfield was within 12 points, 46-34, at halftime. Fairfield closed the half on a 10-4 spurt.
BC made 17 of 33 field goal attempts in the first half (51.52 percent), but didn't have a field goal in the final 2:46. Post had 17 points and six rebounds in the half.
The Eagles took control by scoring 24 of the first 34 points in the second half.
A layup by Claudell Harris Jr. capped a 13-1 run that put the Eagles in front 61-40 with 12:48 to play.
Boston College led by as many as 26 points in the second half.
