A 15-3 run early in the second half gave TCU separation as the Horned Frogs pulled away to defeat visiting Alcorn State 93-74 in their nonconference game on Tuesday night in Fort Worth, Texas.
A 27-point favorite, TCU led by just eight at halftime, and by six when the Braves' Byron Joshua hit a jumper just 12 seconds into the second half.
The Horned Frogs (5-0) immediately responded. Micah Peavy hit a 3-pointer and Avery Anderson III sank a pair of free throws. After buckets by Joshua and Dekedran Thorn cut the deficit back to seven, Emanuel Miller scored seven points of TCU's 10-0 run, and the Braves (1-5) got no closer than points the rest of the way.
JaKobe Coles scored 20 points to lead the Horned Frogs. Miller added 13 points and six rebounds, and Peavy chipped in 11 points, four rebounds and two steals.
Joshua also finished with 20 points, his on 9-of-16 shooting, although he was responsible for six of the Braves' 18 turnovers. Jeremiah Kendall added 17 points on 7 of 13 shooting, and Thorn contributed 11 points, six rebounds and two steals.
In the first half, TCU broke away from a 2-2 tie game with a 15-3 run. Coles had nine points during the burst, including a pair of 3-pointers.
Thorn's layup and a 3-pointer by Jeremiah Gambrell cut the lead to seven, before Coles sank a 3-pointer with 12:59 left.
TCU twice built its lead to 14 points in the half, the second time at 40-26 on a layup by Coles with 3:39 left. But Alcorn State closed the stanza on a 7-1 run, with Gambrell scoring four of those points, to pull within 41-33 at the break.
