Jahmir Young scored 20 points and Julian Reese added 15 points and 13 rebounds as Maryland rolled past UMBC 92-68 on Tuesday in College Park, Md.
Donta Scott added 14 points for Maryland (2-3), which pulled away late in the first half on its way to snapping a three-game losing streak. Freshman DeShawn Harris-Smith had 12 points and eight rebounds for the Terrapins.
Ace Valentine had 15 points and six rebounds to lead UMBC (3-3). Dion Brown added 13 points and seven rebounds and Devan Sapp contributed 10 points and five rebounds for the Retrievers, who saw their three-game winning streak end.
Maryland made 45.6 percent of its shots from the floor, including 6 of 21 (28.6 percent) from beyond the arc. UMBC hit 39.7 percent of its shots, including 5 of 17 (29.4 percent) from the arc.
The Terrapins made off with 12 steals to one for UMBC. Young had four of the thefts and freshman Jamie Kiser Jr. added three.
The Retrievers hung close, trailing 25-18, through the first 11 minutes. But Maryland dominated the final nine minutes of the half, outscoring UMBC 32-6.
During a nine-point run that increased the gap to 34-18, Young muscled for a three-point play.
After Sapp answered with a 3-pointer for UMBC, Maryland followed with 12 straight points as Scott and Jordan Geronimo supplied treys.
Brown stopped the run with a 3-pointer for the Retrievers, but the Terrapins scored the next 11 points in a row. In the minute of the half, Kiser made a steal and threw down a fastbreak slam.
Then, after Kiser made another steal, he swished a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from halfcourt to expand the advantage to 57-24 at the break.
Just 2:04 into the half, a layup by Reese hiked the Terrapins' lead to 62-26, matching the biggest advantage of the night.
