Junior guard Terence Davis tallied 21 points and seven rebounds to help Mississippi to a 94-76 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday in a nonconference basketball game in Oxford, Miss.
Senior guard Deandre Burnett scored 17 points and freshman guard Devontae Shuler drained four 3-pointers while scoring 14 for the Rebels (1-0). Senior forward Marcanvis Hymon contributed 12 points and 13 rebounds and sophomore guard Breein Tyree had 10 points.
Senior guard Johnathan Stove scored 16 points and freshman guard Cedric Russell had 15 on five 3-pointers for the Ragin' Cajuns (0-1). Sophomore forward Justin Miller and junior guard Marcus Stroman added 12 points apiece but Louisiana shot just 36.6 percent.
Ole Miss broke open a close game with a 12-0 second-half burst to take a 70-57 advantage shortly before the midway point. Davis scored the first five points and junior forward Bruce Stevens capped it with a layup.
Louisiana fought back, with Russell draining back-to-back 3-pointers to move within 72-66 with 7:44 left. But Shuler's 3-pointer with 4:15 to play gave the Rebels a 12-point lead and Ole Miss later finished the contest with nine unanswered points.
Louisiana led 35-25 with 5:19 left in the first half after a basket by senior forward Bryce Washington. The Rebels responded with a 10-1 run to creep within a point on Davis' 3-pointer with 2:12 to go.
Russell's 3-pointer gave the Ragin' Cajuns a six-point edge with 1:05 remaining, but Burnett's basket with seven seconds left pulled Ole Miss within 42-40 at the break.
