Junior college transfer De'Quon Lake scored 24 points and gave Arizona State a needed offensive presence in the paint in his debut as the Sun Devils beat Idaho State 94-74 in the season-opener for both teams at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz., on Friday night.
ASU guard Shannon Evans II scored 25 points, making 5 of 13 3-point shots.
Lake, 6-foot-10 and 225 pounds, made 8 of 10 shots from the field and 8 of 14 attempts from the free throw line. The junior from Iowa Western Community College also grabbed seven rebounds in 28 minutes.
Beyond Evans, Arizona State (1-0) showed its expected strength from the perimeter. Point guard Tra Holder packed the box score with 18 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Freshman guard Remy Martin added 12 points and five assists.
Jacob McCord led the Bengals (0-1) with 18 points. Novak Topalovic added 13 points and six rebounds.
The game was tied at 28 with seven minutes to go in the first half, but the Sun Devils took control with a half-ending 23-5 surge in which Lake had two of his five dunks on the night.
Lake then had six points in an 11-3 run to start the second half as the Sun Devils grabbed a 62-36 lead and maintained a comfortable cushion for the rest of the game.
Arizona State played with only six scholarship players for a variety of reasons, including the reported departure Friday of forward Ramon Vila from the program. Forward Romello White was unavailable because of a violation of team rules that dates to last season, and forward Kimani Lawrence was out because of an ankle injury.
