CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Guards Bruce Brown, Ja'Quan Newton, and DJ Vasiljevic scored 15 points each as No. 11 Miami put six players in double figures and coasted to a 99-59 victory over Florida A&M on Thursday night.
Freshman guard Chris Lykes added 13, guard-forward Anthony Lawrence 11, and forward Dewan Huell 10 as the Hurricanes (3-0) shot 58.6 percent for the game and forced the Rattlers (0-3) into 19 turnovers.
A&M guard Marcus Barham scored 22 points to lead all scorers.
Miami took full control of the game less than four minutes into the game after the Rattlers had cut a 6-0 deficit to 10-9 on Barham's 3-pointer.
The Hurricanes then went on a 21-4 run over the next 10 minutes to assume a 31-13 lead. The Rattlers managed to trim four points off that 18-point gap to make it 33-19, but the Hurricanes outscored the visitors 13-9 over the final three minutes of the first period to lead 46-22 at the break.
Miami twice held leads of 35 points at 66-31and 69-34, the last with 12:19 left in the game.
The one downer for Miami came at the 2:58 mark of the first half when freshman guard Lonnie Walker IV injured his ankle tripping over a defender after hitting a 3-pointer from the wing. He was helped off the floor and taken to the locker room. He did not return.
NOTES: This was the 175th win for the Hurricanes in their Watsco Center home (formerly BankUnited Center) against 66 losses. Miami coach Jim Larranaga is 80-22 in six-plus seasons in the on-campus arena. ... The Rattlers were guilty of four shot-clock violations in just over 13 minutes to start the game. ... Miami will leave home for the first time this season when it plays La Salle in Reading, Pa., Wednesday night. Reading is G Lonnie Walker's hometown. ... Florida A&M will play a fourth consecutive game on the road Saturday at Mississippi State.
